Being nice works in many situations. Ideally, It can be a mix of both methods. But, is this security or corrections? Niceness will be taken advantage of. In either position, at times, you need to convey to others that you are the one in charge. Specially in corrections. You will find that the typical officer that has been around for a while suffer from cynicism. Don't mistake arrogance for control or leadership, as it often is by the public because they do not like being told what to do at times. Cynicism can often be a part of it, as trust in others decreases the longer you remain in this line of work.

In the long run, use some of what they teach and some of your methods. Over time, what works for you will be best. Just don't allow yourself to be taken advantage of.

You should find another company that would value your "customer service" approach to security. There are plenty of companies that need security officers who are empathetic and well mannered - think hotels or hospitals or any security officers who would deal regularly with the public and not just guarding things. Don't change. There are too many jerks in the world already!

I will say that the one thing everyone will agree on is the hollier than thou, cocky attitude cops, securtiy, etc attitude that enforcement folks come off with is the most annoying thing in the whole world. It would be why most of the people I know do not respect or like them. We call on these types to help us in a situation and they talk down to us and disrespect us. The arrogance is ridiculous. It makes me sick! Last week we had to call the Sheriff about a weird guy constantly driving around our block. We showed him a magazine about internet porn that fell out of the guys car when he was doing his usual in and out after parking around our homes. We were all concerned due to having young children. The cop then stated well it isn't like it is kiddie porn. I then explained it isn't like you can go buy kiddie porn magazines. He was trying to discount 5 adults who have witnessed this man acting weird. He talked down to us and acted like he really didn't care until two other officers showed up and realized they knew one of our other neighbors. Basically BE A NICE GUY! You are there to help not be an arrogant prick!

There are lots of different ways to be a leader. Just because your way is different does not mean it won't work.

If keeping a good attitude lets you and your co-workers have a better work environment and still get the job done, stick with it.

Sounds like you got into the wrong work. Maybe you might find your skills put to better use elsewhere?
