If the car seems to run fine, it's most likely the hydraulic lash adjusters aka "lifters". It's not a real huge problem. The Galant wouldn't be the first Mitsubishi car to have this problem. In my car (Eagle Talon) the lifters have a tiny oil port that would get clogged by a grain of sand. The good news was that if you got new ones, they were revised with a larger port. They may have done the same thing with the galant, but don't quote me on it, just an idea.

It is a good car! Been there and have not had an issue. Of course it also depends on the current status. Is it in good condition? Carfax check is ok? Oil changes and all? No major repairs? Mitsubishi is a well-known brand and a serious competitor to Toyota in some other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, but if you live in the States and you want a car that is going to have better resale value, then stick to Toyota or Honda.

I have a 1998 Galant & it is doing the same thing, except the noise is a squeaking sound, not ticking. The machanic told me the Driving Belt needs to be changed.

Anyway, I am selling this car for really cheap. $2500

You may have a hydraulic valve lifter getting weak. When the engine is idling the oil pressure is a little less and the lifter will clatter more loudly. Try changing your oil and filter, say, every 500 miles for a couple of times and it may help. Or one grade heavier oil may help.

If its an "engine" sound, its probably a hyd valve lifter out of adjustment.with wear the valve lash gits loose and will require adjustment. One way of checking thats easy is to cut a 2 or 3 ft piece of broom handle off ,put one end on the valve cover at one end of the motor and listen thu stick with other end against ear. Move down the valve cover at each plug location listening. If one is louder by a large amount its a loose or out of adjustment valve lifter. If no change is heard .then search else where....George

these cars are famous for timing belt issues if the belt strecthed then you will here a ticking sound which is your timing is out and the valves are rattling I would take the car to the shop to have it diagnosed because if it is the belt and it brakes you will bend valves and other things which could be a major expensive repair also this car is overhead cam so lifters are not the issue

best you take it in to a mechanic. This could get serious if it is metal to metal hitting each other.
