If you don't know how to add RAM, you're best to take your computer with you to somewhere like PC World, so they can firstly select the right RAM for your laptop and for £14. put it in for you. 512 ram these days really isnt enough, you should go for 1gb but as you say yours is only 314 at the moment, its possible that it wouldnt take so much and 512 might be your maximum.

No, if you are thinking of USB, that is a storage device, will not upgrade your computers system memory.
Depends on the laptop where the ram slots are.
Try a search on the Manufactures web site for your make and modle then go to the support page for your computer there should be a manual for you to download.
Another thing you should know: Your memory is propritatry, you have to have a specific memory module for your computer. Not any old memory module will work. Be safe, get the correct memory for the system other wise you may damage your computer.

Put on an anti-static wrist strap. Turn the computer over and remove the screws. Remove the ram from the slot by pressing down. There is only one way the ram will go in so it should not present a problem

Depends on the laptop... most modern ones have a couple of RAM sockets inside.
Sometimes they are under the keyboard, sometimes they are under a cover in the base... and I guess they could be other places too. You'd have to look up your laptop's manual to find where yours keeps its RAM sockets and how to get at them.
Oh, and some laptops have some soldered-on RAM. Many old laptops only had soldered-on RAM.
314Mb = 256+64Mb with a bit taken out for graphics... so you've probably got 1 filled slot + 64Mb soldered on or 1 slot with 256 and 1 with 64Mb... so to put more in you'll have to take out one of your existing RAM cards.
Use Crucial.com to identify what memory you've got, what memory options you could add.

its not something you plug to the side its got to be inside and in a laptop its hard because its so compact,
you cant have a 314 ram 512MB(more likely) or a 256MB maybe
it would be very hard doing it your self give it to a tech in a shop and while your at it you may want to get it cleaned if its dusty inside this will also speed it up

nope, goes inside. See a tech at a comp shop
And let them do it. Except about 100-150 to spend maybe more if you want the high tess stuff
Also assuming you are not familiar with the innards of any type of computer thus the recommendation on seeing a tech at a shop. More expensive but less chance of flaws, ruining your laptop/notebook.
Honestly, jokes about Dodge Rams or a real live Ram came to mind but thought I'd give the real answer LOL.
