could it be a cooling fan fuse or faulty fan?

Which fan are you talking about, the one on the radiator is not controlled by the switches in the car.
The one in the car will only come on when it is manualy turned on.
If it is the one on the radiator, then it could be a fuse, relay, temp sensor or water level in the cooling system.

Most cars today are designed to run warmer than in the past. It is not uncommon for the gage to climb over half way on a warm day. The large fan runs off off a thermostat and will come on at a pre set temp. Because of the a/c condenser sitting in front of the radiator, the smaller second fan is controlled by your a/c switch and a thermostat, to aid in the cooling process while the a/c is on. You will also notice the smaller fan operating when your defroster is on because the defroster also cycles your a/c compressor to keep it lubricated. In cold weather states, a/c compressors aren't used in the winter and the a/c compressors used to have a tendency to seize up from not being used. If either one of these fans aren't working, you have a problem.

Most cars with electric fans only have one coolant fan. If you have two of these fans, one is used as a primary and the other as a secondary or some other type of configuration. What happens is either they are PCM or temp. switch controlled. For the coolant temp. side of the fan, there is either a temp. switch or sensor that leads back to a relay or to the PCM. At the desired temp. the switch will close or at the desired temp. of the PCM's program, it will engage the relay and route power to the coolant fan motor. In the AC side of the circuit, either as soon as the AC is selected it will engage the same relay to draw air across the condenser, or it will wait for the high pressure switch to close which will signal the PCM to start the coolant fan. The secondary fan will rarely engage as the temp. of the motor has to keep climbing before that one will engage. It is on the same type of circuit as the primary, but it will be separate from it. Good luck.

when the motor gets hot there is a sensor that should turn it on..
but if it is not hot the fan only comes on with the a/c or defroster...
the best way to see if it works is start the car and let it idle with the hood open and .a/c and heater off..watch the temp gauge when it starts to get hot the fan should start automatically
if not and the car gets hot the sensor is bad

no the fan should not come on unless there is a load put on the engine, the more the load the harder the engine has to work, causing more heat, thus turning on the fan, heating or air conditioning causes the engine to work overtime, sometimes even at highway speeds. (which depends on speed and outside air temperature) you can't cool your car more than the manufactures specks. other wise you're condenser will freeze up. oh, and by the way, it will come on before, the car over heats.

You have 2 fans. One runs all the time, so you never notice it kick on, and the other only runs to kick on the a/c. It is only annoying, my 91 300zx did the same thing (I actually had 2 on the radiator, and one for the cooling system). If the fan rattles (especially when hard accelerating) the blades are probally cracked and may need to be replaced, if it rattles too much it could knock something else that you do not want to hurt (like when mine knocked off my power steering belt.... not fun)

good luck ;)

pacdog87 has got it right except the reason the a/c come,s on during defrost is because the a/c dry,s the incoming air to better aid in defrosting.......it does help lubricate the compressor also.....your fan should not come on when using normal heater setting,s...only defrost& a/c.
