When I was in High School, so many of my peers would ask that very same question, especially when it came to algebra, geometry and trigonometry. I would say that arithmetic is the most applicable to ordinary life because it is everywhere. You can use it when you are shopping, (30% Off!) when you are figuring where to invest your money, how much to pay for a house, and math is very useful in almost every job out there. I would say that math is the most important subject in school. As for geometry, trigonometry and higher math subjects, in my opinion these are only applicable to high tech jobs, such as engineering and architecture. Algebra can be very useful when you are trying to figure unknowns and I must say that to get through college in one piece, you should have a very good understanding of Algebra. Math is one of those subjects that you don't know why you are studying it, but you'll be glad you did in the future. Good luck and I hope this helps you!

Good question...well math helps n everyones life every day whether anyone wants to admit it...it may be stupid little things as going shopping and knowing how much money or time like how many hours til a certian event...but the biggest thing is you need math for almost every single job out there. sure you may not think some famous rockstar or athelete need math but if they never learned it they would have to hire someone to take care of their omney and they would have no idea if the peson they hired is stealing money from them. I know it sucks but math is very important and i'd give you tons more examples but i have to get back to work...and just trust me, you use math EVERY day :)

In the majority of cases maths are only important in particular jobs, and these are normally particular types of maths.
The most important thing you will always need is arithmetic. Because it is used in every day life all of the time. So if you can add up, take away etc. you are reasonably set up for life.

Problem one: You have $100.00.
You go to a restaurant, you order three dishes
The total of the dishes are 39.97
There is a tax of 10%
and your friends insist that you pay the 15% gratuity.
How much did you spend?
How much do you have now?
Problem Two:
You have a truck that gets on average 17 mpg on the highway
and you have about 4 gallons in your tank left
Gas cost $3.49 a gallon
Your destination is 170 miles away
You have $20.00 for gas
Can you make it there one way?
This is the simplest form of why at least it is important.

Math is useful when you go to supermarkets, when you have to figure out the tip at a restaurant, when you convert money in a different country etc...
Also Math is useful in many professions like math teacher, lol.
And many others of course.
But mostly, Math trains your brain to think and to be sharp. That will help you with many aspects in life. And when you have kids, you'll need math to help them with their homework... ha ha!
I hope this helps.

Strangely, you use math without really knowing it. Any time you use numbers, it's math.
Example; you're about to meet someone at a certain place and you tell the person you'll be there, (glancing at your watch you calculate) in 20 minutes.
If you can find a certain job that does not use numbers, it is indeed rare.

Simple example. A 2.3kg chicken says cook for 20 minutes per 500g plus 20 minutes. Can you do this simple bit of cookery mathematics and set the timer and not poison the family?

"only basic math is used in real life."
This is only true if you consider that without advanced math you wouldn't have the internet, a computer, electricity, a car, or any other major technological innovation of the last 200 years.

I use a lot of math in the kind of work I do. I used to ask that same question also, but know I'm glad I had it in school.
