Insert: Symbol

Set the font to (normal text) ... it's the first on the list. Any font is ok really, just not Wingdings or Webdings.

Set the subset to: Basic Greek (most mathematical symbols are Greek) or scroll down until you see what you want.

are you using SPSS? (Statistical package for the social sciences?) Standard deviation is a widely used measure of the variability or dispersion, being algebraically more tractable though practically less robust than the expected deviation or average absolute deviation. It shows how much variation there is from the "average" (mean). A low standard deviation indicates that the data points tend to be very close to the mean, whereas high standard deviation indicates that the data are spread out over a large range of values. in short, the lower your SD is, the better. 0.29 is a good value. If you get, say, SD= 20, then you should worry because your data is not consistent.

In addition to Insert Symbol, as someone has already pointed out, you might try Insert Equation.
