Ok here's the short of it. We've got 3 PC's that we'd like online at the same time. 2 of them are absolutely fine, whereas the 3rd is just not having it.

The machine in question is running Win XP Home (the other 2 are running Pro) and all need to connect to our router. The computer that's not working didnt' originally come with an ethernet card, but it's seemingly installed fine. However, once connecting it to the router, it's claiming there is limited or no connectivity. Obviously, the router is fine because I'm typing this now (using one of the other comps).

One thing I've noticed is that booting up takes ages, and the mouse when being moved is "sticky". That is, it'll stick after every so often. Could it be that I've got a hardware compatability problem? Oh, and the card we put in is fine because it was ok in my brothers computer, also running XP Home.

Please help!!!

Well, The problem is that it's not getting a proper IP Address using DHCP from the router.
To bypass this, try assigning a static one ( with DNS and all other required information ). This will work, just make sure it's not the same as an address that the router can hand out
( For Example: if the router hands out 192.168.1.100 - 199 , assign 192.168.1.50 to the malfunctioning machine ).

I would say the card is working find. The problem is mostly likely a XP config problem.

Also the mouse sticking is normal at bootup if you machine is loading a lot of services/programs, lack of cpu.

Check you network config, are you picking up DHCP or allocating an address.

Type ipconfig /all at the command prompt compare it to the others.

hi

First of all i would suggest that you check the LAN cable you are using. See whether light is visible on the ethernet/ lan card.

If not replace the cable. if fine then use right click button on the mouse and click on my computer icon on your desktop. go to device manager. Under network adapters see whether there is any exclamation or question mark in front of the n/w adapter in question. if yes reinstall. if no then

right click on the adapters name....go to properties.......and make sure its status is enabled.

If nothing of the above resolves the issue then try physically removing the adapter and reinserting it into some other slot.

If this also not work then check the n/w card manufacturers name and contact it or buy a new adapter.

i hope this helps.

The fact that the mouse is not behaving indicates your probably have an IRQ conflict between the NIC and the Mouse.

Make sure the PC that isn't connecting has assign IP address automatically, and assign DNS automatically ENABLED.

Change the cable like the other person sugguests. Also, check the TCP/IP settings. It almost sounds as though you may have a static IP address, gateway and DNS server set and if you do, they are probably not correct. This would explain why your computer takes so long to start up.

I recommend you set it to automatic.

Where are you getting the driver from for the nic. It sounds like the driver installed funny. If reinstalling the driver does not fix the problem, then give the computer a static ip address.
