Boric acid. It's safe to humans and pets. Mix some with whatever the ants are eating as a bait. It takes awhile to work, as the ants need to find it, eat it and then it takes a while to work and not all ants will eat the bait.
In the meantime, if you remove all their food and made sure there was no moisture anywhere, the ants will leave on their own.

I had the same problem for a long time until I found a product called "Once and done". It's by Spectracide. I have a brick patio with sand under it. They were there everyday no matter what I did. This stuff really worked. It's been a month and no signs of ants. You can also use it inside the house.

If they are coming into the house, a good, environmentally friendly method of stopping them is to put talcum powder down where they enter the house. If you lay a line of it in front of their "path" they suffocate when going through it, and after a day or two they will stop trying. We used to do this in Australia, where we lived the houses were built on sand, so we were always infested with ants.
Obviously make sure there is no food left out as well, they're less likely to come into the house if there's no food for them. Either that or buy an anteater or echidna!

Although I don't like to kill anything, tere is a product called Nippon which the ants pick up and take back to the queen. This kills her and the ants then have to move somewhere else.

I used to always get ants in the place where I used to live. I cant stand them! As pathetic as it sounds I'm actually quite scared of them! LOL
I used to buy ant poison, but its not the best of things (from experience)
I use the old fashion way.... boiling water, but just to make sure I add bleach with it, it sounds cruel, but it does the trick.
Good luck

I've found that the best way to kill ants is with ant traps. The ant traps that the have the poisonous bait that the ants take back to their collony, then they feed it to the queen and the entire collony dies.
It worked for me.
