This would require most computer users to know the basic knowledge of a computer (and I'm not talking about copying or moving files).
I believe that most people are intimidated by computers and they just want the box to work with little effort. As mentioned in one of the answers, Windows is too easy (and very graphical...hehe).
Also, how many people really know the difference(pros and cons) between OS(s) or better yet between an OS and a computer? Try asking people about the difference between a MacOS and Windows, between a PC and a Mac. I believe that most people think that operating systems are tied to the hardware so most of them probably havn't heard of Linux since we don't have a popular third hardware named specifically tied to linux (sun boxes are not that popular in the consumer world)
Another way to look at this is the popularity of the iPod. I personally think that the iPod offers a lot less but sells lot more than competitive mp3 players. However, you still get question like: what's the difference between an iPod and an mp3 player?
My answer:
1) An iPod is an mp3 player but an mp3 player is not necessarily an iPod. So there are other mp3 gadgets out there that do more than the iPod for a lot less money but you only (usually) see iPods on tv (advertsing).
2) The iPod is "cuter" (the sleek look and the jog dial interface ... I got to give it to them) and visually pleasing
3) iPod is a major rip-off
In the end, it's all about the presentation and being a crowd pleaser.

Wiht the release of the Ubuntu distro of Linux it is possible Linux may finally gain more acceptance on the desktop. It is exceptionally easy to install (really no different than installing Windows) and works very well.

There is still a significant lack of software for Linux-based machines compared to what the market has for Windows machines. That will slow the acceptance of Linux in general until/unless the market start porting over applications.

No, Windows is too easy to use. Linux has tried with various versions but basically too many people use Windows machines have no idea what they are doing. Linux requires some idea of what you want to do and how to get there.
