Both are in their seperate ways, indecent and wrong against nature. Personally I do not see the point of hunting unless you are living in the forest and need to survive. The reason hunting seems better than dog fighting is because the dogs have no choice but fight to the death, they were raised that way, taught how to kill, and competed against their own will. Also, gambling is often, if not always, associated with dog fighting so there's another law broken. But in the end, killing innocent animals either way is just inhumane. Majority of hunters do not do it to survive, they do it solely for sport. Maybe one day people will realize that killing innocent animals isn't so fun until they a same type of experience the animals have.

Deer hunting accomplishes 2 things:

1. It thins out the growing deer population in the United States - ever hit a deer with a car or seen a car that hit a deer? It's worse than a collision with another vehicle.

2. People are able to put food on the table for their families. I'm not an avid deer hunter anymore, but I still have lots of friends who are. The meat is quite delicious, and consider that when you shoot an animal that field dresses between 100-150 pounds, you can provide many a meal during the course of the year in one hunting season. On top of that, deer meat is also very healthy, as opposed to the terribly fatty beef that most Americans ingest each year.

Dog fighting is simply masochistic. Guys train dogs from the earliest years of their lives to be ill tempered and under-nourished so that they can put on a show of two animals literally tearing one another apart. Why? So that they can gamble on the outcome. It's terrible and very disgusting. On top of that, the indictment accuses that Vick was involved in killing dogs that were not fit for fighting by hanging them and beating them to death by bludgening them with blunt objects and slamming them repeatedly into concrete, and I doubt very seriously that anyone plans to eat that meat.

On a sidenote - for those of you who are so anti-hunting - get educated. Go to a slaughter house and see firsthand how the animals that are killed for the meat that you purchase at the grocery and I doubt that you'll feel very good about that next hamburger or chicken sandwich. Hunting methods are quite humane comparatively. Beyond that, there is nothing quite as satisfying as setting a table for a meal that has been prepared from items that are 100% the result of your work and not your shopping.

Geeezzzz, I guess when you sit down to eat your steak or chicken then that's a different story huh.
Hunting deer in season is legal and it is done to manage the population. Otherwise, there is a food shortage and the animals suffer tremendously and are more susceptible to disease.
Using dogs in the sport of dog fighting and gambling is a federal offense. That is why Vick is in serious trouble because he is facing federal charges and the case has been removed from the local authorities where in many cases who you know or who you are determines how you are treated.
Are you people so ignorant of what goes on in this country. I give to the SPCA and guess what folks they euthanize cats and dogs because they can only afford to keep them so long. However, they are not cruel in their punishment and they try to find the animals a home.
If found guilty, this is where Vick will take it in the shorts because of the cruelty to these animals. I mean this is really sicko stuff.
In your question you asked about the penalties for poaching deer. It varies from state to state. However, for first time offenders you lose your weapons (they are confiscated on the spot) and there are fines. If you get caught a second time the fines increase, you lose your weapons and you are looking at some jail time. However, I cannot see how one can compare poaching a deer to a dog fighting/gambling ring that is run over state lines.

Why is nobody addressing the fact that deer aren't tortured when they're hunted, but dogs are. Vick isn't getting in trouble for shooting dogs. He's getting in trouble for electrocuting, drowning, and hanging them. Not to mention forcing them to fight to the death or almost to the death, which might be a little bit worse. Deer hunting is nothing like that. And if you ever lived in a poor, rural area, you'd know that some people depend on hunting (yes, even out of season) to eat during the winter. A lot of people earn their living in construction or off the land, and in winter, food can be scarce. I grew up in an area where a lot of people seriously would have starved if they wouldn't have been able to live off of venison in the winter. These people didn't torture the deer in any way. The deer felt no pain. The same can't be said for what goes on in the dog-fighting world. it's a sick, sick world.

Okay... first off...

"btw, lack of knowledge does not =ignorant...."

umm.... what??? According to webster's dictionary, the definition is as follows...

Ignorant: 1 a : destitute of knowledge or education ; also : lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified b : resulting from or showing lack of knowledge or intelligence
2 : unaware, uninformed

So yeah.... you need to go back to grade school english class and take a look at your vocabulary book.

Now to answer your questions, dog fighting is a barbaric and terrible thing. Not only is he killing animals without proper reason or merit, he also treats them in a manner that is absolutely horrific. Starving them. Making them fight one another. Abusing them. Ultimately, the dogs will continue to be treated as such until they wear out their use, and they are put to death. It's incredibly inhumane.

How can you possibly compare that to hunting? Hunting is done with the intent to provide food and manage animal populations. The expansion of humans has killed off any natural predators that deer may have had, and they now face overpopulation. This would result in starvation, disease, and sufferring for the animals because competition for food and mates will force them to slowly die off. Futhermore, the preventative measures taken by state and federal governments do everything they can in order to ensure that hunting does not negativesly affect the animal population. That is why we have different seasons and restrictions on the number of permits issued and the maximum number of deer that may be killed by a single person. The only people who can apply to get around those permits are farmers, and the only reason that they would be able to do so is because the deer are severely damaging their crops and thus their livelyhood. The punishment for hunting out of season varies from state to state, but typically include a hefty fine and the loss of your hunting license. It is a crime that is difficult to enforce because a lack of government budgeting to do so.

Deer have the ability to live a free, wild life. A life much better than the pit bulls from mike vick's place. Also much better than the lives of the cows that are penned up and slaughtered so you can have your steaks and hamburgers. Which life would you rather have - one where you are penned up, barely able to move, more than likely not allowed to mate, and your death in a slaughterhouse is imminent? Or one where you are free to run wild, mate, and there is a modest chance you could be killed..... Yeah, I thought so.

Furthermore, hunting is an enjoyable and exhilarating experience. Ever hear the phrase "the thrill of the hunt?" The rush you get while hunting is something that cannot be explained to someone who has never experienced it. To borrow a quote from The Old Man and the Boy : "...if there's one thing I despise it's a killer, some blood-crazy idiot that just goes around bam-bamming at everything he sees. A man who takes pleasure in death just for death's sake is rotten somewhere inside, and you'll find him doing things later in life that'll prove it." Any hunter you meet will agree with that quote. Do you think hunting would be allowed if everyone did it just because they were a pscyho with a bloodlust? Don't be ridiculous. Comparing these two things is one of the most outrageous comments I have ever seen.

Well In Vick's case, if the dogs didn't win, one of three things would happen:

1) they would be hung by their necks
2) they would be poisoned
3) he would shoot them

All of these are for losing a fight.. not because it is the humane thing to do to end their suffering. Not only that, he was training a dog already well known to be vicious.. to be a brutal attacker. The concern is more of if one of the dogs escape, what they could do to a human. Besides, if Vick has so much money this is how he decides to spend it, maybe it should be taken away from him.

With shooting deer, it's "supposedly" a sport. But think about it, people who kill other people, consider that a sport in their sick twisted minds. Just because one is called a sport doesn't make it right. Its just another way for them to look at themselves in the morning.

I am not a vegetarian and I enjoy a really well prepared Medium Rare steak maybe three times a year. I am not condemning the sport of deer hunting either.. it's just one of those situations where it's really hard to draw the line of ethics and humanity.

You aren't really very smart are you?

Dog figting is not legal. Deer hunting is legal (assuming you have a license and hunt in season). That's the difference.

And, in fact, ignorant does mean a lack of knowledge. And, yes, we're all a little ignorant some much moreso than others.

ig·no·rant –adjective
1. lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: an ignorant man.
2. lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact: ignorant of quantum physics.
3. uninformed; unaware.
4. due to or showing lack of knowledge or training: an ignorant statement

I'd just like to add to what the others have said:

(1.) dogs are about as close to being sentient as any domesticated animal, and not only are they smart, but they are very affectionate and deserving of our love since they do so much for humans, in various ways.

(2.) There's too many deer. They also have an alarming tendency to bolt in front of you while you're driving, and by the time you hit the brakes you've hit it and it has destroyed your car and possibly caused you major injury, with those antlers and hooves and all crashing through the windshield.

(3.) Everybody talks about the taste of deer meat, but does anyone ever talk about dog meat? Only if you're starving do you even think about killing your dog for food. Deer are extremely tasty and venison is very healthy meat.

(4.) Far fewer predators around to uphold the balance, so it's up to humans to control their populations.

95.) as cute and beautiful deer can be, they are also very destructive to gardens and crops. You can't just put them on a leash and expect them to obey!

I don't agree with hunting either. However, there is a difference between what Michael Vick and his posse has done with dogfighting and hunting.

I don't remember hearing of any deers being electrocuted if they didn't participate in the hunt. I don't remember any deers being hung or drowned. Also, the deers are not held in captivity and starved and tortured before they are hunted.

Any kind of hunting totally upsets me. I wish it were not legal either. However, the cruelty practiced by those who participate in dog fighting even BEFORE the fight shows a real mean streak, a cruelty deep down in the soul that is truly scary. I believe that is why so many of us are up in arms about Michael Vick's actions.
