my mic and speakers plug into back of computer. I opened the computer and see those plugs go into a small silver box that is attached to the motherboard. Does this small box unplug?

While that box holds the audio connectors, the actual sound card/chip is probably located elsewhere on the system board. Both are going to be soldered to the board and not removable.

If you are wanting to change the sound card, all you do is add a new sound card into one of the extra slots on the back of your desktop. When Windows detects the card, it will disable the one on the system board and use the add oncard instead.

There is no reason to try to remove the current sound card from your PC. In fact, doing so would probably damage the system board and cause it not to power up.

No. The small silver box is soldered in place.

No. It is soldered onto the motherboard itself - that is how it is built for all on-board audio sound.
