1. dont put anything of value on display in the windows.
2. make your place apears like people are in alot of the time or that you have no real set time of coming and going (routine means a pattern and therefore a burgulary can be planned when your out!)
3. put good security locks on doors and windows. Make sure your doors and windows are study and can not be easily forced.
4. make sure that people can not walk into your back garden, as if a burgular can stay out of sight of the general public, he has an area where he can break in with out being disturbed. So concider better perimitter tall fencing, and if you have a side gat, a nice tall lockable sturdy gate on strong posts.
5. get a dog, or there was a gadget programme on tv that set up a sencor system that put on flood lights and also activated an automated response( owner saying something, dog bark)
6. If you have trustworthy nieghbours get them to watch your home when your away and remove your mail n free papers etc from the letter box and off the floor in the hall.
7. dont leave vehical keys on view(say on the table in the hall or hung up). Put them out of sight, so they can not be seen from the out side.
8. if you have new appliances or computer equipment delivered, dont just leave the packaging outside for the bin men to take away.break it up and eiter take it to a recycle bin, or put it in a bin bag and seal it.
9. put nets in the windows
10. always lockup all doors, windows and even the shed/garage(excelent place to find tools to break in).
11. If you have a shed with a window, cover the window up so that burgulars can not see that new bike. tools etc.
12. When in your place lock the main door so that someone can not just walk in.If your going to be out in the back garden make sure the windows are closed or only open a small amount with a security lock on and again the front door is locked
13. dont leave your wheelie bin out the front, as they can use it to climb over into your garden.
14. if your planning to go out for a complete day, or a few days, concider automating some lighting and drawing the curtains. I guess it would be possible to have automated curtains too lol!
Finally, once your happy that your security is fine, lock up and then, see if you can get in without using your key!... that way if there ar any weak points you will find them. Think, if i lost my keys and i needed to get in ASAP, how can i get in without causing too much damage?.

sadly there is no 100% method of stopping em. Just to make it as difficult for them as possible.. secure the house, deadlocks etc.. also register property, mark it.. take down serial numbers. e.g. laptops put the bios password on them for a start, a simple thing.
This thing about reasonable force in the uk is ok i guess, but rather vague. If someone enters were I live without permission/rights.. as far as i'm concerned they give up any rights. If they fall down the stairs due to slipping etc.. not my problem. They have the cheek to sue for damages now. I saw in the papers some kids who broke into schools did that. If they weren't doing crime in the first place it wouldn't have happened.
the ones I hate the MOST are ones who target old people as they seem to be a soft target.. I hope the offenders get the **** kicked out of them by other in-mates in prision.

Don't ask me as I would run! One time I put this huge rubber snake across the carpet near the door - I just put it there as we were going away for a couple of months-when I got back the Tv and videos etc were gone along with the snake too! Now, before going we call the police and they make regular rounds by the house.

Creep and grab the burgulars' legs in the dark, tap their shoulders and... shout loudly into their ears/imitate ghostly voices =p
It would send them running off nervously XD

Well I have to say my GUN/S. But I can say that my dogs are the best solution to this problem. I say this because like ten years ago, there were two houses in my neighborhood that had been broken into. (a rareity) My house was NOT touched. BUT my windows were open and they went right by. I'll have to say this being as my dog/s were loose in the house and they knew better. The two houses that were hit did not have any dogs.

I have 2 big dogs and an alarm system if I go on holiday and the dogs go into kennels. If you don't want to get dogs I have heard that if you at least put a beware of the dog(s) sign outside your house it can be a deterrent....x

I noticed in my area they would use your own Wheelie bin to stand on to get through the windows, then use it to cart away your own goods, what i did was to weaken the lid from the inside with a grinder so that it didn't show on the outside then as the ba***ds stand on it they go through hopefully the lid will lacerate a major artery and they will bleed to death straight into the bin, really neat!! lets hope it works

well I keep a few of my lamps on timers. But where I live it is safe. I go out all the time and leave the doors unlocked. and don't even think of visiting now that I have said that. lol
oh if one did get in, I would have to beat it with my Baseball Bat.

Get a dog. Place I had in Manchester was burgled eleven times. Alarms etc., were useless. Having a dog on the premises solved the problem immediately.
