I have a new PC with Vista. the relevant specs are a 500GB hard drive, 2GB Ram, athlon 4400 CPU with Mcaffe security suite. Got it from Dell.

I can't see a big difference between my old Pc which was a standard pentium 3 with 512 Ram.

Because of this I am assuming its Vista, which is slowing things down. Am I right?

Try switching Aero off and selecting Vista Basic to see if it makes a dufference; failing that, my next guess would be "McAfee Security Suite" which if you translate it into English means "big fat lazy resource hog".

liston, dont pay attentiom to the vista bad mouthers, i have vista and started with 1gb ram, that is too slow, with yours you need at least 1 more gb, go to crucial.com
and run the free memory scan, it will tell you that you more than likely need more, im at 3gb now and mine is faster than anything.
you can buy the memory ther too, and im sure you need to by it in pairs so make sure you get the correct memory.
also, when i wen tfrom 1gb to 3, i had to take out my dell memory and put the new in the 1 and 2 slots and the dell in 3 and 4, efore doing this my system would crash, since doing it i have absolutly no problems. i think you need at least 4 gbs then you will be cooking!

Vista goes ridiculously slow when you first use it because it needs to compile information for the index search feature. It should speed up after a few days.

stable component -- you may seek for the weakest hyperlink in speed matters. oftentimes the flexibility supply , case, followers, and CD/DVD drives are maximum unconsidered while development a working laptop or laptop. those would reason matters, all of them. in case you have an el-cheapo rigidity it easily is the in all probability criminal. if your speeds are sluggish after a R/W from the rigidity, then it somewhat is a few thing else totally. must be the SATA bus besides -- i'd provide the rigidity device a stable looking over.

So the suggestion is to spend even more money to get Vista to work?
Best is to install Ubuntu - you get more security , it is stable and free , and will even provide better better 3D effects than Vista's Aero can do.

Vista sucks harder than an industrial vacuum. I seriously would recommend you try UBUNTU Linux. You have a new machine and using UBUNTU will lengthen your sanity and life of your machine by leaps and bounds. It is incredibly easy and you can even try it without doing a hard install.

yeah it does put a bit of a drain on the pcs resources but from the sound of the spec of your pc then you should be fine. Run a disk clean up or defragmentation, they will help to speed up your pc

sounds like vista should be running fine (even though its such a burden)

you shouldn't be expecting blistering speed,

unless it takes a long time to open a folder or something than its fine I would say

Ram allows you to have more programs open at once, not to be used as a speed device!!!!!
