Most refer to Iran as the country known a Persia. At it's greatest the old Persian Empire under Darius covered about 2,000,000 square miles covering from the shores of the Mediterranean to the western edge of India.

Many countries were once part of what was called Persia, including all of or parts of the following:
Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Tajikistan. Turkey, Uzbekistan.
However, if one is talking of something that is Persian, then they are generally only speaking of Iran.
