I've thought about that at times myself !! I think it has something to do with the grade & or shade/color!?! Now as`far as the grade.. there must be something about the texture of certain leads used in them !! When I was younger I new an art teacher that had a choice of pencils he'd use !! mainly do to the grade or texture of it !! by grade I mean certain grades of lead wo'nt smear on certain grades or kinds of ART ~ PAPER !! & school-systems would rather it be a #2 because some machine or comp reads the papers for the correct filled in circle/answer !?! that's the best I can say !!?!! 7/19 "R"r,r`r'r,r`r.'-

The # 1 use to be popular but when # 2 became popular, it made no sense to change the name.

It actually is. Sales of the #2 yellow pencil have remained steady throughout the advent of the computer.

I prefer the #1. Softer lead, blacker line. Wears down faster, though.

it is #1 but it bears the name #2 due to the material make up of the writing portion of the pencil

Number 1 is for the people who write soft.! # 2 is for the people who are trying to write like # 1

Too SOFT!
Too much of a tendency to SMUDGE on papers that are handled to any extent.

Maybe because there is no channel one on a television and they do not want to play one upman ship is why.
