As with many psychoactive substances, the effects of psychedelic mushrooms are subjective and unpredictable. A common misconception is that the effects experienced from psilocybin are due to a poisonous nature of the compound, yet the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a branch of the Center for Disease Control, rated psilocybin less toxic than Aspirin. The intoxicating effects of psilocybin-containing mushrooms typically last anywhere from 4 to 7 hours. Since this mushroom affects your ability to think and function you should not drive while under its influence. As with any mushroom there can be allergic reactions.

You canot die from the psilocybin mushrooms that have hallucinagenic properties....In the hippy days I have had plenty of them...Keep in mind, there are many look alikes out there and you can be very easily poisoned if you get a different type..Also to keep in mind, these are illegal except for certain ritual rites that are allowed by law , mostly on indian owned territories only..and you must be a part of the ciommunity and so much american indian blood in you to be doing these legally..here is some info on psilocybin mushrooms

Only if you pick the wrong shrooms and eat poisonous ones. If you eat the correct ones then they won't harm you unless you have an accident. So don't do anything like driving or climbing etc. on shrooms.
Even good shrooms can make you puke, but don't worry, it's not so bad, and once you've puked you'll feel amazing. The ingredient that gets you high is the shrooms self-defense against being eaten, it stops animals eating them, but they hadn't figured that humans would enjoy playing with their self-defense system.
Shrooms rule, enjoy!

You better make sure the ones you are going to eat are edible. The poisonous ones attack your liver and you might end up needing a liver transplant or you could die. Be sure, be very sure!

Yes you can. In fact forty five people die each year from poisonous mushrooms. it isn't worth it.
The "high" you get is from the poison reacting on your brain.
Some of them in Michigan are called "two step" mushrooms, you can get two steps without dying. Some you can just get the spore on your fingers and have a reaction, it's foolish to put something in your mouth, body, and not know what it's going to do.
The people that don't die have damaged kidneys for life, have to be put on dialysis for life or have transplants.

M'lady, has it right, but Wiki, fails to mention that while psilosin, psilocybin and baeocystin are non-toxic to adults, they can trigger a high fever and death among children. RScott
