I saved my tortoise's shell- but not as an ashtray.
Messy but best results method is boiling. Less disgusting method is ants. Best overall is getting a buddy at the museum or biology dept. to put it in with the Dermastid beetles.

You let it decay. After it has decayed to the poiint where there's like no flesh left on it boil it and then it's ready to go.
P.S, If you get another pet I hope it bites the crap out of you.

Why don't you use a crab shell? Isn't it better to use a bigger ashtray so as to save you the trouble to empty the ashtray every now and then?

Best bet is leave it on an ant trail - they are the cleaners of nature, and will clean it in no time.

Try boiling it, it will make the flesh loosen, if not fall off.
I think that what you want to do it disgusting, but hey, who i am to judge.
