Zambia - officially the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the north-east, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. Formerly Northern Rhodesia, the country's name reflects the Zambezi river.

I spent some time in Zambia last summer building houses in a little village called Pada, with the charity Habitat for Humanity. It was the most amazing experience. Such a beautiful country and all the local people were so welcoming towards us. It has some spectacular sights, like Victoria Falls, and fantastic wildlife and nature reserves. It will always be special to me because of the time I spent there.

I remember it as representing the best two years of my life, as far as excitement, adventure and friendship are concerned. I lived in Chingola & Bancroft, at a time when there were plenty of animals in the "bush". Seeing them in the wild & visiting Victoria Falls are among memories that will always remain with me. The downside was witnessing so much political turmoil in such a lovely country, and breaking my leg. You don't say whether you still live there, & I am wondering if you are familiar with the GNR website, which is a meeting place for ex-Northern Rhodesians & Zambians worldwide. It is www.greatnorthroad.org. Khalani bwino!

My best friend and her husband lived in Zambia for 2 years, just ouside of Lusaka. He managed a farm. She said it was a wonderful country, loved living there, was absolutely beautiful. She did say it was hard seeing all the poverty there. They lived in a gated house, with servants and she had her own driver. She found that quite hard and she is used to doing things for herself and felt guilty and lazy. She had a lad that did her ironing for her and she used to give him extra money and make casseroles for him to take back to his family. They are planning to go back for a hol there next year to see all their friends. I know they would both like to move back there!
