I'd recommend hibernating it when not in use. It won't use any power and has always worked great for me...never crashed. Sleep mode is still using power, albeit a small amount. Hibernating allows for it to quickly boot back up to the point where you left off.

BTW, I like your avatar. I onced used that picture with my boss as a joke. I told her that was the guy interested in the new position.

Standby is what I use most of the time. When I open the case, it immediately returns to where I was. It does use some power, so it should be plugged in.

Hibernate - I refuse to use. Seems like it crashes more than comes back up, and that can take quite a while.

I only use Standby, then reboot my pc once a week. Unless programs installed or removed, or it will be unplugged for a long time. Standby works so well, I'm amazed.

I have my laptop to go into Standby if I close the cover.

sleep: puts your computer in a low power use state but keeps your programs running so when you move the mouse or press the keyboard you see all your programs still open.

hibernate: shuts down youri computer but saves your RAM to hard drive first. when you press the power button the computer starts up normally but you see all your programs open. Hibernate uses no power.

if you use your laptop three times a day, i would recommend shutting down or hibernating at night and sleep between the times that you use it.
