Harry,
It sounds like you have "Dennis the Menace" next door! Are you Mr. Mitchell? Do you remember that TV show?
Of your choices, I'd probably try # 3 (pop out of a bush and take a bat to the kids face the next time he walks by), but modify it with taking the bat and asking him to play a little baseball with you in the backyard. He's bored & he is simply looking for something to do. The messing with the yard will stop eventually.

You might try having some lemonade made up or tea...a beverage of some sort, and the next time you see him, or him doing anything to your lawn.....try going out front (after counting to 10 :o) )....and try to have a calm chat with him.
If he is willing to do this, then you can ask him...have you done something to upset him towards you.....or is he having trouble at home(this one could take time)....and it may take several attempts to get him to talk. All you can do is try.
The other option would be to try and have a sit down with him AND his parents and see what you can talk/work out.
I have a 11 yearold with ADHD who kicks things around and such but has yet to do damage to anything......there could be medical issues involved that even his parents don't recognize, or don't want to.
Exercise patience and see what happens.......sometimes though, even with all the patience in the world and talking, nothing happens...then you need to get the police involved before the child escalates into/onto something worse.
Good luck

Well I personally like option number 3...but since that's a bit on the illegal side..go down to the police department, and have a restraining order put on him. Not only will that open his mothers eyes, but it will give you perfect opportunity to get rid of him if he ever breaks the restraining order. (he could end up in Juvey for a few days up to a few months depending on how many times he breaks it)
good luck...and if nothing else...try number 5, it may not solve anything but at least you will get some kind of a relief/satisfaction...

That is horrible. It is not the child's fault. It is the parents fault for not teaching him to respect other people's property. I would suggest that you pay someone to redo the work he has messed up and present the bill to his parents. If that does not work, file for payment in small claims court.
