Would anyone agree that there is nothing important. Whatever we acheive, we will all end up in the same place and it's meaningless. You might say, "but think about the people you leave behind." All of humanity will come to an end one day. And everything will get swallowed up in a black hole again. Who knows how many infinities of creatures evolved, thought, and lived before we did. We're not special, we're made of the same material as all of the inanimate objects. So would you agree at all?

What you're speaking about is Nihilism. Well the facts are that one day you are going to die and if you have a few moments then you will look back and you will probably see a lot of regrets.
You can't do anything about death, but you can live you life without regrets.Live it like you're going to die tomorrow.
To the fullest.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

What is life? We determine that life exist because of death. The end of an existence. We also know that there is life after death based on each of our religious beliefs. Some even have beliefs in reincarnations, of being born again and given another life. Life is meaningless because there is no point in being alive then be dead at the end. Why can't we live forever? Our body is programmed to change and age after its duty of procreation have been accomplished. Why? Well, maybe life is not just all about living. Maybe it has something to do with how you live your life. I think life is all about relationships. How well you relate to yourself, treat others and exist with the whole world are maybe some factors that comprise the purpose of life. Life exist along with a lot of baggage and the biggest one is our emotions. This single baggage creates a lot of changes to the whole world. How we feel has a lot to do on how we shaped our lives. Our attitudes has a lot to do with how we handle our emotions. What is the real meaning of life? Maybe we'll have different views and answers to this question because I think it has a lot to do with each individuals perceptions on what is life to them. Personally, I live like this is the last day of my life. I don't worry too much of the future because I believe that I am on borrowed time to live. I may not be here to enjoy the future so I am enjoying all of my relationships with other people and with the whole world. My life is not meaningless because I am loved and have loved, I have put a smile on someones face, I have listened and helped someone who's needs are greater than mine. These are just a few things that gave meaning to my life and if I am given the chance of a life after death somewhere in another plane or dimension then it will be a grand life!

I do not agree with the idea that life could be meaningless. Life can be extremely difficult, confusing, yes I do agree to this, but meaningless? What meaning does it have to get up every Morning? There is somebody there who needs us and who also needs us to be happy. Think about who cares about you and cares about how you feel? You will be able to change their life in the way you live. So could this be meaningless?
If we die is then everything for nothing? No, only our body our cloak dies. We humans are more then our body, we are soul and spirit and we carry responsibility for everything we feel and we do. In that we have the ability to change ourselves, and also to have an effect on our surrounding and people and the universe. Could this be meaningless? No way. It lies in our own decision to use our abilities as a human for something which brings more Light onto this earth and into the afterlife, or just squander your inert power for "Nothing". You can make your life as meaningful or meaningless as you choose.

No I wouldn't agree.

I used to be rather nihilistic. I dressed in relentless black and saw the world as a very dark place indeed. I was unhappy & believed life to be meaningless. It's taken me many years to realize that my happiness is my own choice. You can choose to be happy. Your life is as meaningful as you make it. You make it meaningful by loving yourself and others, by appreciating the beauty of the world, by doing things that you enjoy, living with passion, being creative, taking nothing for granted, making life an adventure, going after your dreams...

Once you shift your thinking (it's hard but it can be done!) to positive, you see how the universe responds, wonderful things start to happen and you begin to see the light, you realize that life is a gift to be cherished. Just because we die doesn't mean that our lives are not important. We matter. We are remembered. We can make a difference and leave something behind. Besides, I happen to believe that we have immortal souls within these mortal bodies and our souls live on forever. How we live in this life determines our fate in the afterlife.

Yes, explicitly-speaking, everything is finite. However, do all meanings have to be infinite?

Let me put it another way: people are - what, chemicals and perspectives. In respect to chemicals, we humans are relative blips upon the radar of existence - but chemicals do not comprise the complete picture.

I mean, sure, the brain is scientifically proven to correspond to mental activities, but are such biological ado causing the effects? Remember statistics: correlation does not imply causality.

That being so, just because we are not unique beings does not mean we ARE unique - for our intricate DNA systems mandate that. I realize a broader perspective is most conducive to wisdom, so let's examine the whole of the issue: humans in-take, process, and out-take. There's no difference there, for that is what is. We are all responsible for that, and are granted the gift of logic. This sense of logic necessitates presumptions, and so, implies a finity of everything.

Thus, I do not know what is Beyond (beyond time, history, existence, everything). However, as meanings should be finite, and life IS finite.. I apply meaning to my life, by combining all my thoughts, awarenesses, and self with my ambitions in response to the World at hand.

Yeah I think life is extremely meaningless. We're all born to die. It's such a depressing thought, but that's the way it is.
Makes me think of that song, "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.

Especially this line from the song: "Now, don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky. It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy."

I agree with Answerer 1 that without God, life is meaningless.

Our human nature demands that our life have meaning because without meaning, we have no worth. If we were to completely face that prospect, it would drive us insane or to suicide.

So many answerers will essentially deny meaning with one breath but then in the next breath say something like, "I get my meaning from my children" or "I want to make the world a better place", etc.

In other words, if we can't logically find purpose and meaning through the belief that God exists, then we will invent something that makes us feel good and pretend that it is real.

If we reject God, we will spend our lives in a perpetual search for meaningless good feelings.

For an atheist 'Yes'
and
For a follower of a religion 'No'
In my opinion the point of view of religion, particularly Islamic point of view, is more logical and reasonable and appealing while proving that human is created with a purpose. Our endowed capacity to reason, our natural social behavior, instinct etc also prove the religious point of view as acceptable. Moreover the science, with all its advancement, has no contradiction with the religious point of view about life. Even Darwin's theory of evolution has many missing links and is far away from proving the religious point of view as wrong.

Life can mean anything you what it to mean. Some choose to believe in a God others in facts. The only meaning I can think of for me is for my children. Yes some day everything has to end and yes there are probably more planets just like this one. It's what your willing to build, what you are ready to pass down to your children, what your ready to create. As long as I can pass down something to let my existence be known is enough for me. Even though nothing last forever.
