If someone asks a politician a question they must answer it honestly. And that is all she has done. Does smoking cannabis 25 years ago mean she can't do her job?
I suspect the question was asked of her because some "friend" from 25 years ago mentioned it to a journalist. Personally, I don't think a Labour MP smoking cannabis or having an affair is as bad as a Tory MP doing the same. Labour isn't quite so aggressively moralistic as the Tories, so I think they can get away with it. If she was telling us not to do it, that would be different.

She's absolutely right. Get that issue open and done with. She probably didn't smoke it alone and she had to get it from someone. A person who holds a secret about you has power over you. Expose the secret and the power is gone. What I think is strange is anyone of her age who hasn't at least tried it. She's far better off admitting it now than to wait for someone to expose her.

I presume she only admitted it because one of her ex-friends had offered to sell the story to the press. Most students try cannabis, tobacco, alcohol and sex - is this news? (OK so I was only in the room where cannabis was being smoked - but I admit to stealing the beer barrel when everyone else was high)

How refreshing to see some honesty from a politician. Personally, I don't think it a big deal at all in view of the 60s ethos...
A smoke all those years ago is not significant compared with political corruption today

It doesn't really matter - I heard the last Home secretary smoked it too.
It isn't really an issue - Woman has spliff over twenty years ago.
I appreciate her honesty.

Yes. It would probably come out anyway; it might as well come out from him. As more and more baby boomers are of an age to go into national politics, a decent percent of them will have experimented with mild drugs in their youth. I don't know why it would be a big deal, but why not just say "Yeah I did it, it was a long time ago, let's get back to the issues"?

Im glad she has - why on earth would we want somebody who will have a big influence on drugs policy not to have tried the bloody things!?! Even the most well behaved and responsible students smoke a few joints....if none of our politicians have, we are in even bigger trouble than i thought! why dont they just admit it and be proud!

Yes I think so - no-one is really interested, but it may stop a feeding frenzy by the daily rags. I have no particular liking for politicians of any denomination, but they are all human and I do not expect a plaster saint to be able run the country.

She only owned up, as I bet, someone from her univesity days was going to leak information to a daily newspaper. So she was cornered into it.
Not that it matters, the government and all governments in the near future will have a crap drugs policy.
