For the same model number, the GS variant is slower than the GT.
Your 6600GT is a decent AGP card. An upgrade to 7600GS will give discouraging results. In benchmarks below, a slower 6600GS beats 7600GS.

In an actual game like fear, they are just comparable, so your 6600GT would even be better.

If you want significant improvement, get the 7900GS AGP. BUT awesome performance comes from the X1950 Pro AGP or the 7950GT AGP. ALSO, take note that 256Mb ddr3 beats 512Mb ddr2.
