I recommend you to go to cooking classes! When I first got here, I tried to make bentos and tried cooking from a Japanese cooking book! Only problem was, I did not know how it was supposed to taste. Buying ingredients in the supermarket was also difficult. Now, many years later, we are actually cooking together most of the time. But out of experience, it is one thing I truly regret, never having been to such a class. I mix my menus, spaghetti, curry, make sure he gets all the healthy vegetables, steak, stew, gratins etc. And, get immersed as soon as possible in the whole system. Learn Japanese really well, reading and writing! And, good luck to you!
P.S. Always make sure to make some kind of Miso soup and rice! And another good trick is, colors! Japanese people also eat with their eyes. There are 5 colors; red, green, yellow, brown and orange. So, for example, cook pork steak with broccoli, tomatoes, corn, mushrooms and carrots!
Just saw that NHK BS11 will broadcast cooking classes for foreigners 'Your Japanese Kitchen' from July, 29th at 3:45pm

I am a foreign man married to a Japanese . We have two children. We share the house work with the children.
I was born near the sea so I am fond of fish. My wife goes both ways . Now my daughter is a vegetable lover and my son a meat lover.
I cook Italian .Mainly macaroni , vegetable and cheese baked.
Japanese
The fish dishes differ. Oven Grilled or steamed with vegetable stuffing .
Indian.Curry and rice, spiced grilled chicken.
Chinese . Fried noodles. Sweet sour pork.
Once a month we eat out and the children have a chance to decide what they want to eat.
Now I am trying my hand on some Thai dishes.
I am not a lover of sauce so I keep away from French dishes .

How about asking someone to show you how to cook Japanese food(or how to cook if you were never interested to cook like me)? I'm Japanese who married to foreigner and lives in foreign country. My first cooking teacher was my mother-in-law. My husband helped me grocery shop until I got used to pick stuff to buy. I don't think you don't need to prepare food everyday. You can go out and eat, too. Or order food. I also think you don't need to make only Japanese food. Try to make what you want to eat and let your husband taste them. He may like them. It's just cheaper to make your own food than dinning out all the time.
