Many say in 80's there where many fast bowlers but there were no instruments to measure there speed.... the bats man faced every one without any protections...

remember Nawab Patodi Indian Cricketer lost his eye when the ball hit his forehead.

Jeff Thomson of Australia was long regarded as the fastest bowler in the world (with a fastest ball clocked at 99.7 mph and rumoured to have broken the 100mph barrier),

Dennis Lillee was considered the 2nd to Jeff.

Todays fastest bowers by speed:

1st) Shoaib Akhtar (PAK)
2nd) Brett Lee (Aus)
3rd) Shane Bond (NZ)
are considered the fastest bowlers in the history of the game.
Shaun Tait (Aus) to follow

Shoaib Akhtar has been timed at over 100 mph and was the first bowler that has broken the barrier. Muhammad Sami of Pakistan was also clocked at 100 mph but reading from speed gun were thought not be right at the moment. Sami was then clocked on 100 mph in the same match.

obviously it is, Shoaib Akhtar of pakistani cricket team...

Shoaib Akhtar (born 13 August 1975 in Rawalpindi, Punjab) is a Pakistani cricket player, widely recognized as one of the fastest bowlers in the world, earning him the name Rawalpindi Express. He made a world record by clocking 100mph twice. His ability to bowl fast yorkers, well disguised slow balls, swinging deliveries, and sharp bouncers made him lethal even on dead pitches. In late 2006 he was embroiled in controversy when he failed a drugs test, the ramifications of which are still ongoing.
