It's social conditioning and gender differences. The real reason why women try to appear more youthful is b/c women intuitively know that youth attracts men. It all boils down to attention seeking and competition b/w women - the more attractive she is, the more men she can pick from and thus the more envied she is by other women. As a result, it boosts her own self-worth and status amongst other women in the social hierachy.

Because women are full of life in them , they are not dull and want to add colours to the life of there loved ones.
What is bad about pretending to be young , one thing I would like to bring into your notice is that today men want there wives to look beautiful and attractive and above all children when take there mothers for the parent teacher meeting want there mothers to be well dressed and mod.
This is the demand of the time and if women at home and office will be dull no one will come well dressed , they always try to impress there women co worker.

As we age, the older we become, the more invisible we are to men in particular, but society in general.
I have noticed that my opinions and questions are becoming less important. And in fact, young clerks may actually not see me standing waiting for service. My mother, who is in her eighties has been totally invisible for about ten years now. That is when people began to answer her questions by telling me the answer when I was standing beside her...
It is part of our general disrespect for the elderly.
Women are very good at assessing situations and adapting to them. I would say that women try to look younger or pretend to be younger because it gives them some credibility which is lost as we age!
And in Asia, I noticed the opposite. I was in a store with my daughter and she asked a question, and the clerk turned to me and answered the question...How about that??!

there's no big deal about it if it makes the woman feel good.
men run away when they discover you are older than what they take you be. so if you have the looks, why not. feel younger and live longer. you only are a youth once in your life time, so why take a quick rush to the grave by wearing age wherever you go.

I don't. Some day I may pretend to be older than I really am, then everyone will think I seem really young for my age!

As a mere man I find it wierd that teenagers spend their time wanting to look older than they are, then women in middle age want to look younger than they are, but the elderly often boast of their great age!

Do they? Wow.I didn't know that. Probably because younger make them feel more confident and beautiful and you know all that would bring up their self-esteem.They just feel good if they pretend they're young.

Be painfully honest with Yourself and the rest of Humanity....Who, other than the terminally ill, really want to grow old?
Let the girls have at least one dream that they can call Their own......"Eternal Youth and Beauty, and the power to attract and to seduce Men". They have earned it.
When i turned 50 Ifelt 'good' about finally reaching it. My friend discovered chocolate, flanelette nightgowns and sleeping in. Has a new 'boy' in Her life. Life is 'good' once again
