Sorry, I am not a real baseball fan, but starting to get there. I am a statistics and number guy though, and I see some things that don't seem right. Such as a pitcher having 5 shut out innings, then a couple of pitchers after him give up a couple of runs, then one pitcher pitches one inning with no runs or hits and is given the win. What sense does this make. I am not complaining, I just want to understand how you can pitch a shut out for more than half a game and lose out on the win to a guy that pitched one good inning. I don't get it, please educate me.

The winning pitcher is the pitcher on record (in the game) when your team is in the lead but only if your team KEEPS the lead. So if the game gets tied up or the other team takes the lead after you have left the game, it is a no-decision. However, say I am the pitcher and my team is leading 1-0 and somebody gets a hit and then I walk a batter and then get pulled for another pitcher. There are 2 men on base now. Say the new pitcher gives up a home run to the next guy up and makes the score 3-1. The 2 runners that got on base while I was in the game pitching get credited to me still so I would get the loss assuming my team never tied it up or took the lead again because the first 2 runs would put them in the lead and those are both the guys that were on base from when I was in the game. Make sense?

Whoever is pitching when the winning team scores the final run that gives them a lead is the winning pitcher. A starter must go at least 5 inning to get the win. For example: if a team is losing and hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth, the last pitcher in the top of the ninth will get the victory. Also, if a starter leaves the game with a lead but the other team ties the school against another pitcher, he will get a no decision, no matter the outcome of the game.

To get the win a starting pitcher must complete 5 innings of work. The official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher that pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead

In Major League Baseball, a win (denoted W) is generally credited to the pitcher for the winning team who was in the game when they last took the lead. A starting pitcher must generally complete five innings to earn a win. Under some exceptions to the general rules, the official scorer awards the win based on guidelines set forth in the official rules. The winning pitcher cannot also be credited with a save in the same game.

for a pitcher to get the win his team must be winning when he leaves the game and if there are runners on base and the next pitcher gives up a hit and those base runners score they go against the pitcher who just left the game and if that team is still winning then he will get the win as long as his team doesnt lose the lead.if the team is losing after those runs score and his team scores the agasin to regain the lead then the second pitcher get the win. if not the second would get the lost. hope that helps

the starting pitcher gets the win only if he has pitched 5 full innings provided the bullpen holds the lead the rest of the game. if the bullpen blows the lead or the score is tied, there becomes a new pitcher of record. basically, the pitcher of record gets the W or L.

if the starting pitcher of the winning team leaves before the 6th inning then it is up to the official scorer of the game to decide who gets the win. He/She will decide based on which pitcher had the most significant impact on the win.
