For me i think Sisters of Mercy, The Merry Thoughts, Suspiria and Rosetta Stone. I prefer the older bands.

Siouxsie and The Banshees tops the list for me. Her lyrics, sound and look were and still are amazing to me.
Some others I like are Bauhaus, Sisters Of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, Love Is Colder Than Death, Lycia and Clan Of Xymox.

Most important bands:
Joy Division (Not Gothic but influenced the trend)
Bauhaus (really fleshed out the genre with rock influences)
Siouxie & the Banshees (Started the gothic trend)

Joy Division - although they don't follow the aesthetic, their gloomy songs definitely influenced generations of gothic bands like Bauhaus, the (early) Cure, and the (early) Cocteau Twins, etc.

Some of my favs that are older.
Covenant
VNV Nation
Monofader
Acumen Nation
FunkerVogt
T.O.Y. (Previously Evil's Toy)
And why. Well the Lyrics of Covenant and VNV Nation are just flat out wonderful and meaningful. The reason for all of them in General is because they just have a good beat and many of their CDs are just good CDs as a whole.
Top 2 though, VNV and Covenant outta those 5.
(Agreed with SOME older KMFDM and NiN but those too common)

Cradle of Filth, Nightwish, Cure.
Cradle for being so diverse, melodic, a good mix of emotions. Nightwish for pretty much the same reasons.
The Cure for being one of the Original and founders of Gothic music.

Hi there, I think The Cramps were pretty good at the time, saw them on nurmeous occasions, they always put on a good performance, Bauhaus were good but think they took it all a bit too seriously really, and saw A sex F too, they were ok, but they do not stand out like the Cramps do!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane..
