The direction of nature and origins took a turn when humans started combining thinking and feeling. But while some commit suicide, others try and find better ways to live and the ones who are searching out-way the ones who are suicidal.

People commit suicide when they feel despondent and see no way out. Their despair overcomes the will to live.
I don't understand why you wanted an atheist's opinion on this. I'm sure that in America more theists commit suicide than atheists simply because there are so many more theists than atheists. Once a theist loses faith and hope in God, where else is there for him to go? He is taught that God is THE way, THE truth, and THE light.
Atheists believe in relying on themselves and in human solutions to their problems through reason, science and rationalism. Of course atheists could lose faith in human solutions and commit suicide.
I've never heard of a gene that predisposes someone to commit suicide.

I say it is simply what separates us from the rest of life on this planet...free will. I suppose it could be a lack of the survival instinct.Genetics? Maybe. For now? An unanswerable question. "Oh that this too too sullied flesh should melt, thaw, and resolve itself into a dew. Or had the Everlasting not fixed his canon 'gainst self slaughter. Fie on't, ah fie, 'tis an unweeded garden that grows to seed. Things gross and rank in nature posess it merely...that it should come to this".

Suicide is usually the result of mental illness, depression, which is a physical disease, a chemical imbalance...
and as a disease it can kill, just as measles or diphtheria.
Measles and diphtheria aren't related to morality or religious belief; mental illness isn't either.
And as far as evolution goes, humans aren't the only species that evolves. All bacteria and every life form is constantly evolving. With the ga-zillion life forms existing in a fixed space they are bound to interact and affect each other.
"What are we to say about suicide?" We're to say to the potential suicide, "Stop, let's get some help for you." To loved ones who've been affected by suicide we're to say, "You have my deepest sympathy for this tragic loss."

Suicide is an act of desperation. Whether you're an atheist or a believer....whether you believe in evolution or not.... suicide is simply an act chosen by desperate people without the tools to rise above their pain.

I believe this behavior, is precipitated by the fight or flight response. When we feel a threat, we will stand and fight or try to escape.
If our perception of reality is that we are trapped in a situation, where we are "helpless and hopeless" to escape, then their may come a time when we choose suicide, just to escape the psychological pain.
I know of no research that has been done to prove or disprove, this hypotheses.

I tried it once because i did not like me at all-because i did not understand that i had to love myself. When i was out-a hand came out of the darkness, a voice said take the hand and live- "what if I don't" i asked. "We will love and counsel you" It was my choice...I took the the hand and I lived

I'd say "go ahead! more pizza for me"

ok my guilt got he better of me.....I say other than being highly contagious or a serial killer don't do it. Your pain will be paid foward. meaning life has a way of passing it on. Your bad time on earth has a limit. you will be rewarded. Not in gold or diamonds but you will see...... (gotta check out the end of the story man,,,,,,,,) It ain't over until they say "The End"

Suicide is an act of selfishness. It is a permanent solution to a temperary problem. It is a coward's answer to facing up to reality and responsability.
Like the song says:

SUICIDE IS PAINLESS,
IT BRINGS ON MANY CHANGES,
AND I CAN TAKE OR LEAVE IT IF I PLEASE.
