Something took it away. It is called INTEGRATED GRAPHICS and for it to work, it needs videoram. 64Mb of system RAM was shared w/ graphics.
If you plug in a discrete graphics card there, BIOS would happily return the 64Mb to system RAM.

IF you ONLY HAVE 256mb YOU better be thinking about at least 512MB. That is the Minimum for XP and Vista needs 1GB.
Now for the answer to your question. The difference between what you have installed 256 and the 192 Shown is being used by SHARED VIDEO DISPLAY. That means your video display card does not have any memory of its own and is stealing what it needs from RAM. This is normal.
Nothing you can do about it, cept put in MORE RAM.

The minimum is 64MB of RAM but you don't want to be anywhere near the minimum. You would be best served with 2GB of RAM. Should be me more than enough for your needs.... if it truly is just a family PC.

Some laptops and PC's with onboard graphics cards use the computer's RAM to keep costs down. it sounds like your graphics card is using 64meg.
By onboard I mean no card in the AGP slot. 256 meg of ram is hardly enough anyway if you're running XP.

First, make sure you're looking at total memory and not free memory (it won't all be free). Also, if the computer is old (which it must be if it has only 256mb in it), the motherboard might not support that much memory. Or, if it's one 256mb chip, the motherboard might not support an individual chip that big.

if you have a onboard graphics card it will borrow some system ram.
256mb of ram isn't enough for today applications mostly. go buy some more and possibly a new graphics card that has its own ram.

Some graphics cards will actually use system ram. This is because they do not have their own on-board RAM. The "better" ones, per say, will have their own RAM on it, and some even have their own fans. :)

there are quite a lot of contributing factors. like, the ram is faulty, or its leeched by... lets say your graphics card. it is also possible that the manufacturers put it this way as it is a so called "universal standard"(128,256,512...). the same goes for your hard drive. hope it helps!

I assume you are referring to total physical memory. So you probably have four strips of 64MB RAM or one 128MB strip and two 64 MB strips? Check the 64MB RAM, may be one is not seated properly or is not compatible or is bad.
