NO... vaseline is a petroleum based product and will degrade the plastic gears and cogs.

I lost a $200 train engine because of the same thing.

Go to your hobby shop and use the oils, greases, and lubricants recommended by the manufacturer.

It should do fine, and in my own experiments with vaseline and a lighter, I found that it just doesn't ignite, so heat isn't going to cause a fire or anything.

However, it did melt... which may not be much good, as once the friction causes it to heat up it will run all over the place, possibly jamming up other moving parts, and not hanging around where you need it!

Get to a model shop and invest in some of the proper stuff. It will likely set you back some extra money, but at least you know you've got good stuff to work with.

EDIT: Don't use WD40. Its not a lubricant. Whilst its great for loosening stuck hinges and locks, and removing squeaks from things, it provides only very mild and short-term lubrication. and its incredibly messy to apply to small areas, even with the straw attached to the can.

Yes you can. Vaseline can be used for all sorts of things, even appliances in the mouth. There is no harmful chemical breakdown of any kind. Hopes this is helpful. Be sure to remove any excess, and avoid getting it on parts that you want to stick or adhere to each other or any thing else.

You'd be better off asking in a model shop to be honest.Vaseline may make the plastic perish with continued use.My brother used stuff for his train set, but it was proper stuff for the model shop.

It will do in the Short term but its probably better to use some silicone grease.

Just give it a squirt of WD-40. That'll fix anything.
