If the bills were incurred by both of you then they become your responsibility. If they were debts incurred in her name then the estate pays for any claim made to the estate. It is u sually required to put information in the local newspaper and the debtors have a limited time to make a claim. These will be paid out of any retirement or insurance fund.

If only his name is on all debts, all you need is a death certificate to provide to the collectors and it ends. Some will harrass you - but not to worry. The estate only kicks in when there is no will. If he has an insurance policy, the ins. co. will pay out as instructed.
