I'm not quite sure what I did. But I went to the start menu>run>cmd, and typed in a bunch of stuff. And now when I try to open any programs from the start menu they won't open.

The reason I did it is because I read in a forum how to hack into myspace. (I wasn't actually going to hack into somebody's account, other than somebody I know, and tell them) I just wanted to see if it would work. Here are the instuctions the person gave me:

Not a lot of people know this, but it can be done;
Open op the command prompt at start->run->cmd
Type:
assoc .exe=.txt (note the space between assoc and .exe)
press enter
type:
assoc .cmd=.txt
press enter

Now your cmdprompt is patched:

type telnet myspace.com 23
user: the username
pass: ../../../username/pw.pwd

you are in!!

It was a trick to screw up my computer, none of the programs will open from the start menu now.

Do a restore

Restoring the Computer to an Earlier Operating State
If problems occur after you install a device driver, use Device Driver Rollback (see "Using Windows XP
Device Driver Rollback" on page 52) to resolve the problem. If that is unsuccessful, then use System
Restore.
NOTICE: Before you restore the computer to an earlier operating state, save and close any open files and exit any
open programs. Do not alter, open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete.
1 Click the Start button, point to All Programs→Accessories→System Tools, and then click System
Restore.
2 Ensure that Restore my computer to an earlier time is selected and click Next.
3 Click a calendar date to which you want to restore your computer.
The Select a Restore Point screen provides a calendar that allows you to see and select restore points.
All calendar dates with available restore points appear in boldface type.
4 Select a restore point and click Next.
If a calendar date has only one restore point, then that restore point is automatically selected. If two or
more restore points are available, click the restore point that you prefer.
5 Click Next.
The Restoration Complete screen appears after System Restore finishes collecting data and then the
computer restarts.
6 After the computer restarts, click OK.
To change the restore point, you can either repeat the steps using a different restore point, or you can
undo the restoration.

I would agree with Douglas M. restore back to a point-try to find a restore point before you opened the cmd box, and allow the computer to restore, Your best bet is to choose one from the day before. BTW reformatting and or re-installing your operating system should ONLY be done as a LAST RESORT-I have a friend that consistently goes to web sites and downloads programs that give him the worse types of spy ware, trojan's and viruses, and he is "restoring" or "reformatting" at least every other week-he has already totally lost, the hard drive from that computer and went ahead and bought a new computer-and now that one is starting to show signs of crashing. RESTORE will be the best for now-let us all know what happens-this is what I would do first.
Then to protect your computer and yourself from this-don't do this again-lol.
Hope this helps.

That is why end users, (non-tech people) should not use the cmd, and start typing a bunch of stuff into it. You will most likely have to format and reinstall now.
