Very broad statement (without identifying your country of origin). But very likely true in almost any context.

Most govts are often more concerned with maintaining their own power, and politicians with pursuing their own agendas, to notice what's happening on the streets of most people's daily lives.

Favorite question to ask a politician on a campaign tour -- how much does a gallon of milk cost locally. Most can't even guess anywhere close.

They pay attention only to the extent that it affects something they want, power, money, etc.
