We should expect more from *every* Congress than we've been getting. The Dem's were the ones who did the stay-up-all-night, and the Repubs are the ones threatening to filibuster, so nobody's looking great in last night's scenario. I do agree with you--and I'm speaking as a Democrat--that we need Democrats with more guts than we've been getting. Of the many (many many) things I hate about Bush, he's not afraid to have people dislike his decisions. If only they were GOOD decisions.

Well first of all, the Democratic Party is a very loose association of individuals of widely variable viewpoints and interests. It's sad they didn't have more guts to keep sending back the vetoed Iraq timetable bill until it was signed, but that's sometimes how it works.
Further, there are many barriers to their agenda. The Republicans' ability to filibuster in the Senate and President Bush's veto require the Democrats to either compromise or accept stalemate. The Republicans can't push new policy anymore...but they certainly have the ability to maintain the status quo---and since they've been in power for years, that's exactly what they'll do.
If you had 2:1 democratic majorities in both houses, or at least a 6:4 in the Senate with a Democratic President---that would change the story considerably.

Your party is ordering pizza.
The "guts" of your party is on a $10.00 cot proving to Cindy Sheehan that "Democrats are Serious" about the war.
Instead of demanding a "new" and "intelligent" strategy.... if it's so goddamn easy, then why DEMAND one, and have your precious Democrats OFFER a better solution?
I'm still waiting for the media to report it, because if the idea was even 5% good, the media would have already said that "Democrats have winning strategy".
John Kerry lost an election based on "immediate withdraw". So whatever this "winning strategy" is, I'm sure someone would love to know the details.

Sadly, the Democrats are generally (as a party) disorganized and incapable of pursuing coherent agendas with much vigor.
The Republicans, while much more coherent and organized, tend to only view their own particular moral majority viewpoints as valid, and thus try to use their coherence to steamroller everyone who doesn't agree with them.
In short, neither part serves the general needs of the country -- at least not anyone who doesn't fall within the conservative cookie-cutter majority.

democrats and republicans are not any smarter than one another.
in any case, the act in which you speak is just an overlydramatic act in order to get people talking, and its working....sort of.
most people that i know of are not talking about the war in iraq or about bring peace: thier talking about what a stupid publicity stunt this is, and why do they need to bring COTS to the senate if its an ALL-NGHTER?
