The oxygen sensor reads the amount of oxygen entering the valves and send the reading to the engine. This improves fuel economy. If you have a broken oxygen sensor, you will get poor gas mileage. If you don't get it fixed, your engine can get damaged in the future. The oxygen sensor is located in the front end, underneath the car. You need a lift to really get a good look at it.

Not only that air/fuel mixture will be wrong and waste fuel as others have indicated, on a more sophisticated car (personal car 93 Lexus 400), the traction control, and other computer control system will not work. If not fixed in a long run, the very rich air fuel mixture will likely plug up the catalyst converter. So it is a vital item that one has to fix it. Third party replacement oxygen sensor is available for purchase online. Depending on the location of the oxygen sensor, you may even able to change it yourself. Please note, there maybe one, two, three, or even four (my old Lexus has four) oxygen sensors on one car so make sure that you know which one to change.

It can and does affect fuel mileage and power. The O2 sensor measures the amount of oxygen left in the exhaust and sends the info back to the computer, which changes the air/fuel ratio and timing accordingly. A faulty or disconnected sensor will send false readings to the computer which in turn may tune to an incorrect air/fuel ratio causing poor economy and power loss. If you have a faulty O2 sensor, just replace it. They cost about $20 each (some vehicles have more than one sensor) and are pretty cheap to have installed as well.

It makes a huge difference it regulates how much fuel goes into your block. It controlls the exhaust gases if it wasnt there your cat will get clogged and you will have poor emissions. Your car can also stall becasue it is only running opn masss air flow sensor. The perfect air fuel ratio is 14.7lbs air/1lb fuel. That is the perfect one so that all air and fuel is used. The mass air flow sensor senses the air going in and the computer then puts in enough fuel based on that ratio. Sometimes it is regulated so you have better emissions. So if you dun have O2 sensor you will have poor emission your cat will get clogged.

The oxygen sensor on your car is used by the on board computer to adjust the fuel / air mixture at the fuel injectors. This makes your car run more efficiently and produce less pollution.

Yes, it can increase your fuel usage if its not working properly. It detects whether the fuel mix is lean or not.
