My son got above console from my x husband - dont know where he bought it from. Recently i bought a replacement controller on ebay as his other one broke.

However it does not fit - it has round attachment rather than uxb . i phoned micfrosoft but they say his console is a japanesse model.

My query is - if i go and buy a controller today in UK shops will it fit and if i get wireless one will it work. I dont want to waste anyone money and need it desperately.

The controller you bought with a round plug is for the Xbox, NOT the Xbox 360. Xbox 360 controllers are white rather than black/green, and come in 2 varieties - wired (USB) or wireless.

If you go into a UK store and buy an Xbox 360 controller, wired OR wireless it should work with his Japanese Xbox 360. Wired ones you just plug in and go, wireless you have to connect to the console, which is a simple case of following the enclosed instructions (you press the button on the console, by the memory card slots, then press the button on the controller, by the headset socket, and they will find each other.)

If you decide to buy another controller at a store, ask the sales associates if it is compatible w/ the Japanese model. Video game fanatics will know for sure, especially if you go to a Game Stop (a famous video game store chain in the US). The wireless controller might be your best bet because it will automatically program itself to the console's code. The downside about wireless controller is that you will most likely purchase a lot of batteries depending on the amount of gameplay your son does. Rechargable batteries are good too.
