Not everything but they are important, you want to put your best foot forward when meeting someone. It has lost some of it's importance in the past 15yrs, but I think that is starting to change back. You will never regret making a good impression on someone, but you would regret a bad impression.

Here's the deal. It will work almost everytime If the very first thing you say to a stranger has humor in it , particularly if its making fun of yourself, it immediately breaks the ice , it tells them that your only human and ypu are no better than they are and puts everyone at ease. Often an immediate friendship can be established. But for me all of this is very difficult because I am better than everyone else, better looking.more talented, much more educated and rich. Therfore I dont need friends, but for of you that are less gifted than I am, you might try my suggestiions
