"Elapse" means the time between 2 things. If you ran from point A to point B in20 seconds, then 20 seconds is the "elapsed" time

Elapsed time is the amount of time that has passed since the beginning of the experiment or test. For example if you were tracking how long it takes light to travel to earth from the sun, the elapsed time would start as the light is produced by the sun and end when the light hit earth's surface. In a more general sense, you could think of elapsed time as a coach recording time on a stopwatch as you run laps, so if you can run a mile in 6 minutes, the elapsed time from the beginning to the end of the run is 6 minutes.
