how correct is it to use the expression award with something like death?

I think it is that new thing, called sarcasm.

Seriously, the idea of a person getting their just reward for an action would lead to the phrase "awarded a sentence of ..."

Humm, I've never heard it as "awarded" the death sentence.

Sentenced to death by lethal injection -or something-

Technically, any sentence is "awarded" by the courts. My traffic tickets were "awarded" to me. It all comes down to the ceremonies of your jurisdiction.
