I live in California and occasionally drive by dairies. The cows don't look all that happy to me.

I think the 'happy cows' campaign is a satire on another ad campaign older people will remember. Bordens' milk used to advertise that their milk came from contented cows. Their mascot was a talking cartoon cow named Elsie. (Her husband was Elmer, the mascot for Elmer's Glue, a glue made from milk, originally by the Borden company).

Also, California only recently overtook Wisconsin as the state that produces the most cheese in the US. So the ads showed how cows in California have it easy compared to Wisconsin cows. They don't have to stand out in the snow. It's warm and nice all year.

Of course happy cows come from California. They're happy because they left California.

Those commercials irritate me. Especially given how much water CA has to pump in for its agriculture, it's not like we should be supporting giant factory farms out there. I'm sure it's not as idyllic as the commercial looks, but half the people in this country are idiots, so I'm sure they'll buy it.

Where did you hear that? Of course they can be happy in other states, except maybe Alaska. Alaska is too cold.

Because, other states don't pay for cheese commercials.

I'd imagine they are a lot happier in India.
