My spouse took out credit cards in my name with my information. Can I close these accounts if I am the primary cardholder, that is the person identified as the one opening the account at the time it was opened. I now have a lot of debt on cards in my name that I was not aware of until just recently.

Close the accounts and if you want to file a police report you may not have to pay the money. Family stealing is hard if you want to save a relationship with the thief. I would probably find this to be a reason for a divorce since next she could mortgage the house, trusting her wouldn't work for me.

You can close them, and you should. Also, get a credit hold. My mother in law had her identity stolen, so my husband (as a precaution) got a credit hold... Now, whenever anyone applies for a credit card using his info, he gets a phone call and either accepts on denies the request.

On a non-money related note, you may want to see a couple's counselor. Your spouse is showing some signs of unhealthy behavior.

She is your spouse. Therefore she is of the opposite sex. How can she take out cards in your name, which is undoubtedly masculine. I would go and see whoever issued these cards. And there may be grounds for further action.

CLOSE then NOW!!! Regardless of who opened them, you'll be responsible for the debt. I'm speaking from experience here.

Make a moratorium. destroy your credit cards. Pay the most burdensome and promise not to sign credit cards again if it troubles you.

Divorce, she'll leave when the money dries up anyways.
