Before this gets out of control, may I specify that I have many black friends and they're great people.....but you know what I'm saying to though with this question.

incubabe, hey, wait a minute, I'm not embarrased about being white first of all, and if I was black, I wouldn't be embarrased of that either, I'm speaking generally of this topic.

I'll never understand why ANYONE who claims to hate racism would want to brag about his/her race. Just as race doesn't predetermine negatives, it doesn't predetermine positives either. Accomplishments are only worth bragging about if they are your own.

EDIT:

Since someone brought up scholarships, programming, organizations and such, I will post the response I gave to someone who asked a question regarding this matter:

People have mentioned that there is no such thing as reverse discrimination. This is true but, in my opinion, not for the reasons thought by others. Reverse discrimination doesn't exist simply because discrimination is discrimination regardless. The term reverse discrimination implies that discrimination is the creation of a particular group (or particular groups) of people. And it implies that it's rarely ever practiced by all other groups. However, this simply isn't true.

Do white people experience discrimination? Yes, they do. And denying it won't change the fact that it happens. Denial also won't change the fact that any consideration which is given to race is race based discrimination. Likewise, any consideration which is given to gender is gender based discrimination. Consideration which is given to age is age based discrimination. Consideration which is given to sexuality is sexuality based discrimination. And so on. Regardless of the points that people argue (White people are in the majority, blacks have been enslaved and discriminated against in this country from day one, women are still greatly oppressed by men, and so on...) discrimination is still discrimination. The definition doesn't change according to circumstances.

Do I think the existence of BET is discrimination? No, I don't. There's nothing wrong with trying to appeal to a certain audience. Doing as such isn't discrimination. But do I think that BET is needed? No. I don't think BET is needed anymore than I think WE (Women's Entertainment) is needed. Turning on the television and seeing white celebrities isn't in any way "slam dunk" proof that blacks are purposely discluded from programming. Does it happen? I'm sure it does. This country is full of prejudice and discrimination. Many people make a point to say that whites are the majority in this country. Well, that being the case, it's beyond ridiculous to assume that absolutely everything that's "white dominated" is as such due to discrimination-- And that includes television programming. Doesn't this mean that the majority of television programming is white? If making said judgement is based upon skin complection, sure. But again, this doesn't necessarily indicate discrimination. If people are so concerned about the number of black faces they see on television then the issue shouldn't be whether or not they have BET. It should be promoting black entertainment in general and encouraging the acceptance and success of black entertainers/celebrities.

Concerning scholarships and other types of programs--
I absolutely do believe that such is discrimination. To consider race, sexuality, gender, etc... is discrimination which is based upon those very factors. Affirmative Action is discrimination. Minority scholarships, women's scholarships, minority grants-- ALL programs, organizations, and institutions which give preference to race, gender, sexuality, etc... practice discrimination. People are blind to believe otherwise and to believe that they are doing any good whatsoever. For example-- Is the presence of a lending institution, which gives preference to blacks, doing anything to resolve the issue that there are several other lending institutions which give preference to whites? Not at all. The several "white" lending institutions will continue to discriminate. Race is still being made an issue. And, rather than fighting it, people are accepting it. It's the same as saying, "It's ok that you're discriminating against us. We don't care as long as we can have our own things."

In spite of all the complaining that people do, so many are complacent-- satisfied to a fault-- so much so that they are willing to welcome segregation with open arms. All of these programs, organizations, and institutions which give preferential treatment to certain groups of people are nothing more than germs disguised as band aids. They are segregation hiding behind the claim of equal treatment/opportunity. Discrimination cannot be fought with discrimination. To do so is to fight a losing battle.

What a lot of people don't realize is that some whites speak on this matter because they don't want blacks, and other people, to be judged according to their race. That's exactly how I feel. I want my husband and my friends to be judged as people whose personalities, beauty, intelligence, etc...are characteristics that they possess regardless of their race.

This question will always be asked and the answers will always be the same. Until we all learn about equality and tolerance we won't get anywhere. It's true that for the most part when minorities have a celebration of their heritage, it's a prideful event. As is with Caucasians with events such as Oktoberfest. It is never a racial issue. However, when American "whites" exclaim "White Power/Pride" of course there will be negative connotations because of the history behind the expression. It's a nasty generalization/stereotype/profiling but it's a fact of life created by society. It's sad, but true. Asians and other minorities, as mentioned above will never be heard from because the fact of the matter is that the battle between blacks and whites will always be more prominent because of the long history.

It is how it is done and what is said. Everyone is proud of where they come from, and likes to let it be known. If you put another race down though, that is not setting a good example of your people. When the name calling and bigoted remarks start then you have crossed the line from taking pride in yourself to lowering yourself and standards, not only of your race but of yourself. A person will judge an entire race on the actions of a few, so it is important for us all to remember we are all equal, and we need to treat each other accordingly.

Wait until you're in the minority and then you will have the right to stand up and yell racist. Yet, I absolutely agree with you. While I celebrate the differences in people, I am also proud of who I am and my roots and should be able to say so without it automatically meaning I think less of another race. Good point!

You can if you can read, travel and keep an open mind. If you are limited within your white race, you will be challenged, by being called a typical white person and you will keep asking questions like this.

i hear you and I'm with you.......it isn't racism until we open our mouths and say something, but the NAACP chugs right along. what would happen if there were an NAAWP? we'd be portrayed as the klan organized wouldn't we? what a double standard. so many people have forgotten about the first amendment. if the blacks and latinos and anyone else can stand up and promote and organize their people, don't come back and cry foul when we try to do the same

Because white people are of European descent and the Europeans have pretty much f*cked over every race of color. Native Americans, Aboriginees, African Americans. Even Irish Americans were treated like the n*ggers of Europe. White people are the one's who created superiority based on race and used it to bring other races to heel. SO racial pride only developed because people were taught their race made them inferior and had to go through adversity because of it. When have white people had to go through adversity as a whole?

its okay, I'll wait

People will scream racist because it's an easy cop out and excuse to act stupid.

Here is the problem. Being proud of ones race is fine. Standing up is fine. But putting down every other race in the name of racial pride shows racism.

well, i think it's fine to stand up for your own race as long as you wouldn't say something against another race. I think as long as you would stand up for a white man and a man of any other race, it's okay. as long as you haven't said anything to make your race sound superior to any other, it's all good.

and i don't think bragging about your race is acceptable. i can't just go around being like, "o black people are amazing, and they're the coolest people ever". that would be wrong. it just wouldn't be right of me. i would be more specific... like "my dad (who is a black man) is amazing and the best dad ever"... but it isn't like i said he was amazing because he was black. i would say it because as a PERSON, he is amazing.

so yea... i think about like that... hope that helps!!! :)
