my honest opinion: your a guitarist i think you should prove yourself wrong ;)
im a guitarist too and i know dont want the guitar heros gone for good. too much emo/pop-punk easy crap today. (although there are some modern metal bands i think have good guitars)
i know i wanna follow in the guitar heros' footsteps. its a long shot but you should go for it. your not the only one who feels that way. tons of other people think so too.

What's wrong with guitars serving the song? If you find yourself liking the music, then what they did was good, whether the guitar player is doing basic licks because he can't do more complicated stuff or because he simply chose not to, since the song called for something simple (some players don't learn to 'shred' because they simply aren't interested in playing that type of music).
(I guess it's true that the ability to play music can hamper ones enjoyment of it).
It's the same with food. Does a dish need a 15 spice blend? Some, perhaps. But sometimes you want something simple, something that accentuates the natural flavors, like salt.
A good example is Neil Young's 'Are You Passionate'. There is one track w/ Crazy Horse on there that he lets loose. But most of the stuff on there is an homage to Memphis soul & R&B, and the playing reflects that (though there is some feedback which to me adds interest).
Some of my favorite guitar albums, like David Bowie's 'Earthling' (Reeves Gabrels), or Phil Collins 'No Jacket Required' (Daryl Struemer), are so simply because I like how the guitar sounds and how it mixes with the rest of the music.
But if one really wants to hear some good guitar playing where the guitar is a more integral part of the music should check out Steve Hackett. Excellent on both acoustic & electric guitar. His most recent rock albums 'Darktown', 'To Watch The Storms' and 'Wild Orchids' are good choices. Plus he's done classical albums as well.

I'm afraid that the only guitar shredders are in underground metal bands that play in drop B and what not. I think the guitar has lost its status as a musical icon. I don't listen to any music past '94, at the latest, because all rock music is simply three chords with no solos or anything. Even the drumming and singing stinks nowadays. That isn't to say a great guitarist will starve to death, but I don't think there will ever be another true guitar hero.

There will always be guitar heroes as long as their music is around. From Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to Eddie Van Halen and my favorite Joe Satriani. In the past 10-15 yrs we had to listen to nothing but "grunge" music, which to me is nothing but noise feedback when you hold the guitars to close to the speakers. The guitarists of tomorrow should listen to the 60's, 70's rock and 80's hard rock and heavy metal. Skip the 90's, because that decade sucked.

Yes in modern regular (generic) rock, the solo has died down. You need some metal. (not terribly heavy but you know some oomph) Try Dragon force Bullet For My Valentine. Avenged sevenfold. Bands like this do solo and they are good at it.

The best advice I have for music fans: "Turn off your radio."
Even good bands have their dullest, least interesting songs put on the air for radio play (which is why most people, if they could name one Metallica song, would thing "Enter Sandman").
There are good bands out there, and talented musicians, but their craft is ill-suited for the radio. Yes, even setting aside the radio-play bands, you still have to wade through a ton of crap to find the songs that you love, but the search is worth the time.

rock will never die out, and as long as their's rock, there will be guitar heros. but as time goes by, the number of them goes down, now everyone is just copying others and not making their own styles, except for a few. but theyre still out there

Don't skip the 90's. Then you would miss Green Day, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, and a ton of other good bands. And trust me, Tom Morello and Billy Corgan definitely rip at guitar.
