The last truly good horror movie was The Blair Witch Project. Watch no horror movie made after 1999.

But I realize that is not everyone's taste. Depending on whether you enjoy, subtler, character driven horror, or gore and insanity, here is a list of some of the best horror movies ever made. All movies marked with an (*) denote the original and NOT the remake. Sorry the list is so long, but once I start on this subject, it's hard to stop:

Psycho*

The Birds

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre*

Night/Dawn*/Return of the Living Dead

Martin

Halloween

The Thing (Here the John Carpenter remake)

In the Mouth of Madness (all but forgotten Carpenter film that is actually pretty damn good)

The Silence of the Lambs (often gets thrown in the Psychological Thriller category, but trust me, it's horror)

The Wicker Man*

Alien

Nightmare on Elm Street

People Under the Stairs (hey, I liked it).

Poltergeist

Jaws

Pretty much an David Cronenberg or David Lynch, but especially, for the former, The Fly (here the remake) or Videodrome and for the latter Blue Velvet or Mulholland Drive).

Susperia

Le Diaboliques*

Carnival of Souls (lost gem from the 60's)

Candyman

Hellraiser

Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein (1930's Universal versions, Probably not too scary, but still damn fine movies)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Creepshow 1 &2

Evil Dead

The Shining

Freaks

Exorcist

Cat People*

Curse/Night of the Demon (same movie, just slightly different edits. Either one is great)

The Abominable Dr. Phibes

I also enjoy the recent horror films from Dark Castle. They're just gory, creepy fun. In this case, these films ARE the remakes:

House on Haunted Hill

13 Ghosts

That depends on whether there are going to be kids in the room, if not I would suggest Ghost Ship. It is about 3 or 4 years old but it is an excellent movie. The beginning of the movie is awesome. Nothing like I have ever seen before. I wont ruin it for you but I will say it is one of my all time favorite movies and I love horror movie.
BTW I like watching it in the dark, it really adds to the movie.
P.S. If you have to take a potty break dont forget to pause the movie because it is one of those movies you have to watch it all or you will miss something.
Hope you enjoy it.

Dracula, Price of Darkness. Made in the early 1970's by Hammer Films, it is a great watch. It stars Christopher Lee and Peter Cusing (who both by chance also starred in the Star Wars Movies). Mr. Lee has limited speaking lines, but before the recent "Dracula" movie that in my opinion fails miserably, shows that the earlier movies prevails.

Mr. Lee performed Dracula in four movies in the early 70's and it was coincidental that Peter Cusing also stared in 3 of them. "Dracula Has Risen From the Grave" is another good watch as well as, "The Horror of Dracula".

In Star Wars version 4, 5, and 6, Peter Cusing played an an ambassador to Darth Vader. Christopher Lee played Count Dooko at his age of 80 in genuine years. Since Peter Cusing had died before filming of the recent movies, they used his likeness from the previous films. Since Mr. Lee was 80 years old, they used his likeness during the fight scenes by way of computer generated likeness because he was not able to actually interact in the fight scenes.

While other films have starred Frank Longela and more recently Gary Oldman, the older Dracula movies are better.

Saw IV truly traumatized me. I had not seen any of the other ones because I am so scared of gore movies. I don't know how I got through it, but I remember not wanting to watch it, so I just listened to the noise and closed my eyes - it made it worse. I had to go outside after wards and get some fresh air because I felt like I was going to throw up. Every since then I can't watch scary movies / blood movies anymore. I don't know why people would find it entertaining to watch this stuff.

A good horror as per me ( a horror fiend) is one that can make you really uncomfortable at night/alone with out resorting to excess gore/bloodshed. So go for:
- THE DESCENT (simply fantastic)
- A TALE OF TWO SISTERS (creepy Korean horror)
- ART OF THE DEVIL II (Thai horror on black magic)
- DARKNESS
- FRAGILE
- ABANDONED

The above titles rely more on atmospherics rather than gore to induce effective chills & subsequent nightmares. Happy viewing!

The scariest, most horrific sci-fi movie ever made: the original "Alien."

The sequel, "Aliens," written and directed by James Cameron (Titanic, The Abyss, Terminator) is also an excellent movie. More action than scary, but the original Alien can't be beat.
