Both are useful for different songs / styles.
It takes time to learn either well. I do both but I play acoustic only. A pick allows me to play bass, rhythm, and lead at the same time.. also allows tripplettes... My finger-picking allows me to do several styles.. Scruggs..... Bluegrass.... Travis.. arpeggio.... cotton picking... and Atkins styles.

It depends on what songs you wish to do.

I can make my martin sound as bright and pretty with my fingers as I can with a pick. Chet Atkins used finger picking on electric guitars very successfully... so one of the above responders is incorrect.

I would suggest you learn both.... each will serve you well.

It depends on the tone and style you wish to play. They are different tools. Your question is similar to "Which is easier to work with - a hammer or a screwdriver?". It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. Fingers may be used (and are) on both nylon and steel strings and on both electric and acoustic guitars. There is a demonstrable difference in tone. Because you can play more individual notes simultaneously with your fingers, it is useful for particular tones and types of music. A plectrum is useful for speed along a particular string and with certain scalar runs. What do you wish to play?

It depends on what you're playing.

Generally, picks give you a louder, bolder sound appropriate for rock chords, while the fingers yield softer sounds for ballad-type songs.

A pick is for steel strings. Fingers are for nylon strings. A pick is much easier for steel strings because you'll wear your fingers out. Also it sounds better on steel strings, your fingers sort of damp the sound. Nylon strings are just generally easier to play because they're not as hard and tight, so they're easier on your fingers.
