Hurricane Katrina did significant damage in Mississippi. One town of Long Beach was wiped off the map. The Naval Home in Gulfsport was damaged, making it unsafe for people to live in it. All of the residents were transferred to the other Armed Forces Home in Washington, DC. Casinos were destroyed in several coastal cities. Even the Stennis Space Center had damage.
The difference is that Mississippi is well on the road to recovery while half of New Orleans' population has left and never returned.
