I just bought a 98' Buick Skylark about 3 weeks ago. This week the brakes started to squeak. The dealer said that he had just put new brakes on the car. It only squeaks when I am going really slow and about to make a complete stop. I don't know much about cars. How do I fix this?

If I do have to get them replaced, how much should I expect to pay? What do I tell the mechanic so he won't jerk me around?

if they just put new brakes on they used the cheapest brake pads they could find. so you either have to listen to the noise which doesn't hurt anything and your brakes are fine or have to have someone install replacement pads like semi-metallic pads.

I would bet the dealer lied about replacing the brakes.

GM vehicles have wear limit indicators installed on the disc brake pads. These are metal tangs attached to the brake pads, which contact the rotors when the pads are reaching their wear limit and they make a squealing noise.

I would suggest having someone other than that guy look at your pads to see if they are good or not.

3 weeks ago, they are still under warranty. Go back to the guy who put them on and insist they look at them. Please note it might just be road dust. Oh, insist he show you the brakes also and make sure that they have not much wear if they are new.

Buy some brake cleaner and spare it on the brake pads, chances are they're just dirty

rotors are warped or pads need to be changed since your a girl the dealer thinks he can pull one off on you ask him to show you how thik your breaks are and before that go to a walmart and look at a new one and most likely hell say this is the breaks it needs a thinner kind no all breaks are almost an inch thick or more and ask him to check the rotors if it looks wavy get him to get new ones and install thim

Your brake pads are wearing down. Replace them, or have them replaced.

Might just be dust in the brakes, or they are glazed over.
