I know that there are no single trains running the length of the continent, but is it possible to cross areas like Sudan and Zimbabwe by train? It would be an adventure indeed!

I am not sure about trains in Sudan and their coverage...

But,
there is a train from Asmara to the coast (Eritrea) - this is an old steam locomotive (supposedly the Italians used the tracks during the War and the Eritreans have painstackingly rebuilt)
from Kinshasa to Kindu in central DRCongo
from Nairobi to Mombasa on the coast (Kenya) -- this has overrailed a few times in recent years so not sure about safety
from Tunis to Djerba (Tunisia)
Egypt and Morocco have developed train systems covering the country
Uganda used to have train service -- not sure now
and probably several in west Africa

The Blue Train is the most famous of the luxury trains in Africa.
