Try the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbons. It's slightly out of date (it was written like 150 years ago), but it's still considered a classic on the subject!

Cheers!!

Edward Gibbon's book The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is a must read. If you look it up by "Gibbons Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire", you will find nothing. Also, for an older source, Tacitus' Annals of Imperial Rome is a good read. But the Gibbon is a must. You can probably find it in an abridged version, because I think the full thing is like 3,000 pages or more. My copy is only about 600. Both of the texts, however, are about the later Roman period.

It may be out of print
The Grandeur That Was Greece And The Glory That Was Rome
or I man have reversed it
The Glory That Was Greece and The Grandeur That Was Rome

Back in the dark ages when when my siblings along with our Dad went to college, we took ancient history out of that text. It was a fantastic book, let alone a text book. I have it here buried someplace. Sorry I can't be more accurate.

If historical fiction counts, try the series by Colleen McCullough. Well researched and written.
